For an Ontario business, letter B of the checklist leads to the Ontario Business Registry, H to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), and consumer matters to Consumer Protection Ontario. For letter P, most private businesses fall under the federal privacy law. The remaining letters are the same as anywhere in Canada.

- B, registration: the Ontario Business Registry handles registration and filings for businesses and corporations. ☐ I know my registration's renewal timing and have the record on file.
- H, hiring basics: the WSIB administers workplace insurance. ☐ I checked my registration obligations before hiring.
- O and V, consumer dealings: Consumer Protection Ontario explains consumer rights and how complaints work. ☐ My quotes and contracts state price, scope and cancellation clearly.
- P, privacy: see the federal summary of privacy laws. ☐ My privacy policy reflects what I collect.
The Ontario market
Ontario's biggest challenge for a small business is not finding customers; it is being chosen among many competitors. Toronto, the capital, together with Mississauga, Brampton, Markham and Vaughan, forms a very large and crowded market. Ottawa, Hamilton and London are major markets in their own right, and the north is a different world again.
In a crowded market the growth letters decide most outcomes:
- S, search: generic pages ("serving the GTA") get lost. Specific pages that name real services and communities, and answer real questions, earn attention.
- R, reviews: buyers compare review counts and recency side by side. A steady routine beats an occasional blitz.
- Q, quick response: with five alternatives a tap away, the first business to reply often wins.
Seasons: south and north
Southern Ontario's winters are cold but moderated near the Great Lakes, while northern Ontario's heating seasons are longer and colder. A business serving both should plan two calendars.
- In the south, demand for many services can be steadier; plan review and search work for your shoulder seasons.
- In the north, peaks and troughs are sharper; refresh the Google profile (G) and service pages (S) well before the busy season.
- Either way, compare key numbers (K) year over year, not month over month.
Programs and support
We do not track Ontario programs individually. Support programs open and close too often for a checklist site to keep current. Start from the federal starting a business hub, which links national and regional options, and confirm current details with each administrator.
A first-month order for a new Ontario business
Ontario owners face the most competition, so the ownership letters matter even more. Anything you build in a crowded market needs to stay yours.
- N and B: search the name, register through the Ontario Business Registry, and check your CRA business number needs.
- A, D, E: domain, business email and Google profile registered to the business from the start.
- H: WSIB obligations checked before your first employee.
- M: measurement installed before any advertising, so the first dollar is counted.
- R: a review routine from your very first customer.
How we would approach the growth letters in Ontario
Narrow first, then widen. In a market this big, it pays to own one service in a few communities before claiming the whole province.
- G and R: a verified profile and a written review routine from week one.
- S: one page per service, then one per community you truly serve, each with something specific to say.
- W and Q: a fast mobile site, a tappable number and a same-day call-back rule.
- M: measure inquiries per page, so you widen only where it works.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I register a business in Ontario?
Through the Ontario Business Registry, the province's online registry for business names and corporations. Your CRA business number is a separate federal step.
Do Ontario businesses need WSIB coverage?
Many do, depending on industry and staff. Check the WSIB's own pages before hiring and record what applies to you, with the date, under letter H.
How do I stand out in a market as big as the Greater Toronto Area?
By being specific. Name the services and communities you really serve, build reviews steadily, and answer faster than competitors. A narrow, honest page usually beats a broad, vague one.
